The history of Four Sigmatic
Four Sigmatic was founded in 2021 by Tero Isokauppila. The founder’s story takes us to Finland, his home country, where Tero was raised by a professor of the human body and a scientist specializing in producing and using plants for food. Having come across cordyceps whilst training for a marathon, he decided to devote his life to unconventional ingredients like functional mushrooms and superfoods.
Four Sigmatic originates from “four sigmas” (or four standard deviations) above average food. The most nutrient-dense and studied foods on the planet. This category involves around a hundred items, and Four Sigmatic has made it its mission to include at least one of the items in its consumable products.
Today the company is headquartered in Los Angeles, California, and sells more than 30 mushroom products, including coffee-replacement beverages, wellness elixirs, protein supplements, and beauty products.
What are Functional Mushrooms?
There are approximately 14,000 species of mushrooms described worldwide, with only a part edible. Functional mushrooms make up a specific group of about 15 different species.
Functional mushrooms are famous for having unique properties that extend beyond their nutritional background, hence the term “functional.” Whilst many properties make them unique, they also have many things in common, like enhancing immunity, balancing energy levels, improving digestion, and providing organ support.
The most common functional mushrooms are Lion’s Mane, Reishi, Shiitake, Maitake, Cordyceps, Turkey Tail, Enokitake, and our favorite, The King of Mushrooms — Chaga.
What are the Benefits of Chaga Mushroom?
The fungus is a natural anti-inflammatory, helps to lower blood sugar, reduces blood pressure, alleviates arthritis, and even supports preventing and slowing down the progression of cancer cells.
Chaga mushroom has been famous for its many benefits, like helping regenerate damaged skin cells and nurturing the skin with enzymes. Due to its high antioxidant value, Chaga helps your body fight free radicals. The antioxidants are found in the outer layer of the mushroom, called Sclerotium, which has a very high melanin content and helps protect your skin from UV damage. As a natural anti-inflammatory, it has been used to treat many skin inflammation areas like psoriasis, eczema, allergic rashes, and more.

Four Sigmatic Chaga Products
As you might know from before World War II, rationing regulations cut the amount of available coffee to just about half of what people had been used to, which led to many crafty alternatives, like okra seed coffee in the West and Chaga coffee in the North. Isokauppila claimed that he and his team drew from the knowledge of their grandparents to resurrect a drink that’s now gaining huge popularity.

How does Four Sigmatic Chaga Coffee taste?
As big coffee enthusiasts and Chaga lovers, testing out the Four Sigmatic Chaga drinks has been very exciting! As you’ll be able to see, some of the mushroom coffees lack an adequate dosage of Chaga, at least according to standard studies. Yet depending on whether you’re familiar with the medicinal mushroom, you’ll recognize its bitter earthy tones under the coffee.
If you’re completely new to consuming Chaga, then yes, the mushroom smells and tastes like tree bark, but positively. Once the fungus has been processed, it has beautiful sweet undertones. The taste is often a good indicator of the mushrooms’ source and quality.
